Incomprehensible
Creator, the true Fountain of light and only Author of all knowledge:
vouchsafe, we beseech Thee, to enlighten our understandings, and to remove from
us all darkness of sin and ignorance. Thou, who makest
eloquent the tongues of those that want utterance, direct our tongues, and pour
on our lips the grace of Thy blessing. Give us a diligent and obedient spirit,
quickness of apprehension, capacity of retaining, and the powerful assistance
of Thy holy grace; that what we hear or learn we may apply to Thy honor and the
eternal salvation of our own souls.

Who/what
are Angels?
-
CCC 328 The
existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture
usually calls "angels" is a truth of faith.
-
CCC 329 St.
Augustine says: "'Angel' is the name of their office, not of their
nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is 'spirit'; if you
seek the name of their office, it is 'angel': from what they are, 'spirit',
from what they do, 'angel.'"188 With their whole beings the angels
are servants and messengers of God. Because they "always behold
the face of my Father who is in heaven" they are the "mighty ones
who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word".
-
CCC 330 As purely
spiritual creatures angels have intelligence and will: they are personal
and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as
the splendor of their glory bears witness.
- Angel comes from the Greek word angelos, meaning “messenger”. They are therefore emissaries sent by God from heaven to guide and protect us from all forms of danger and inspire us with thoughts & desires that are holy. They also offer our prayers, sufferings, & good works to God as well as intercede & pray for us day and night.
- Revelation 22:8-9 8 I,
John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them,
I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me; 9 but he
said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant[a] with you and your
comrades[b] the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book.
Worship God!” à So
generally; angels do not allow themselves to be seen because man would
tend to worship them. Fallen angels, on the other hand, try as much as
possible to be seen and heard by men in order for them to be worshipped.
-
Each angel is a
different person; hence our guardian angel is a one-of-a-kind friend who loves
us and will journey with us while we are alive.
Who are angels in the eyes of the saints?
-
“An angel is put
charge of every believer, provided we do not drive him out by sin. He
guards the soul like an army does” (St. Basil the Great)
-
“When tempted, invoke
your angel, Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him; he trembles and
flees at your guardian angels sight”. (St. John Bosco)
-
“Jesus has not
left me alone; he makes my guardian angel stay with me always”. (St. Gemma
Galgani)
-
“We should pray to
the angel who is given to us as guardian”. (St. Ambrose)
-
“Our guardian
angels are our most faithful friends, because they are with us day &
night, always & everywhere. We ought often to invoke them… What a joy
it is to know that when we go out of the house, we are never alone en route.”
(St. Jean Marie Vianney)
-
“For pity’s sake,
don’t forget this invisible companion, always present, always ready to listen
to us, & even more ready to console us… one of multitude who joined with
St. Michael in the heavens to defend God’s honor against Satan & all other
rebellious angels, to vaquish them in the end and drive them down to
hell?...your angel who is always close to you, who never leaves you, no matter
how badly you treat him.” (St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina)
Hierarchy
of Nine Choirs of Angels and functions:
|
++ 1. SERAPHIM ++
It is the 6-winged Seraphim who sing the
Sanctus, "Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts" (Isaias 6:3).
Seraphim (singular "Seraph"), mentioned in Isaiah 6:1-7, serve as
the caretakers of God's throne and continuously shout praises: "Holy,
holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. All the earth is filled with His
Glory." The name Seraphim means "the burning ones." It is said
that the charity of the Seraphim burns like white heat in a flame. The
Seraphim have six wings; two covering their faces, two covering their
genitals ("feet"), and two with which they fly.
|
++ 2. CHERUBIM ++
Cherubim have four faces: one of each a
man, an ox, a lion, and a griffon vulture. They have four conjoined wings
covered with eyes, and they have ox's feet. Cherubim guard the way to the
tree of life in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:24)[4] and the throne of God
(Ezekiel 28:14-16).[5] -- The cherubim are mentioned in Genesis 3:24;[4]
Exodus 25:17-22; 2 Chronicles 3:7-14; Ezekiel 10:12–14,[6] 28:14-16;[5] 1
Kings 6:23–28;[7] and Revelation 4:6-8. Cherubim are also the angels often
depicted as babies with wings in Christian art.
|
|
++ 3. THRONES ++
The "Thrones" (Gr. thronos) or
Elders, are a class of celestial beings mentioned by Paul of Tarsus in
Colossians 1:16 (New Testament). They are living symbols of God's justice
and authority, and have as one of their symbols the throne. These high
celestial beings appear to be mentioned again in Revelation 11:16. Also see Ezekiel
10:17, and vision of Daniel 7 - 9). The Thrones are said to be the way by
which God accomplishes his judgements (St. Gregory).
|
|
++ 4. DOMINATIONS ++
The "Dominions" (lat. dominatio,
plural dominationes, also translated from the Greek term kyriotites as
"Lordships") are presented as the hierarchy of celestial beings
"Lordships" in the De Coelesti Hierarchia. The
Dominions, regulate the duties of
lower angels. It is only with extreme rarity that they make themselves
physically known to humans and are believed to look like beautiful humans
with feathered wings as shown in art. They are also the angels who preside
over nations.
|
|
++ 5.
VIRTUES ++
The "Virtues" or
"Strongholds" lie beyond the ophanim (Thrones/Wheels). Their
primary duty is to supervise the movements of the heavenly bodies in order to
ensure that the cosmos remains in order. The term also appears to be
linked to the attribute "might", from a Greek root. In Ephesians
1:21, which is also translated as "Virtue". They are charged with
giving the power with which to accomplish the ordering of Nature.
|
|
++ 6.
POWERS ++
The "Powers" (lat. potestas (f),
pl. potestates), or "Authorities", from the Greek exousies, (see
Greek root in Eph 3:10) appear to collaborate, in power and authority,
with the Principalities (Rulers). They are bearers of conscience and
keepers of history. They are also the warrior angels created to be
completely loyal to God. Their
duty is to oversee the distribution of power among humankind, hence their
name. Finally, the choir of Powers are given the duty to order out how to
execute what has been commanded. The choir of Powers direct the lower
choirs on how to order creation.
|
|
++ 7. PRINCIPALITIES ++
"Principalities" (lat.
principatus, pl. principat?s) also translated as "Princedoms" and
"Rulers", from the Greek arche (see Greek root in Eph 3:10), appear
to collaborate, in power and authority with the Powers (Authorities). Shown wearing
a crown and carrying a sceptre, their duty is also said to be to carry
out the orders given to them by the Dominions and bequeath blessings to the
material world. Their task is to oversee groups of people. They are
the educators and guardians of the realm of earth. Like beings related to
the world of the germinal ideas, they are said to inspire living things to
many things such as art or science. Principalities are the leaders of the
last order, and direct the actual implementation of God’s will.
|
|
++ 8.
ARCHANGELS ++
The word "arch-angel" comes from
the Greek (archang?l?s), meaning chief angel, a translation of the Hebrew
(rav-mal'ákh) [9] It derives from the Greek arch?, meaning to be first in
rank or power; which means messenger. The word is only used twice in the
New Testament: 1 Thessalonians 4:16 and Jude 1:9. Only archangels Michael and
Gabriel are mentioned by name in the New Testament.
|
|
++ 9. ANGELS ++
The "angels", (malakhim Greek for
messengers), are the lowest order of the angels, and the most recognized and
are most concerned with the affairs of living things. In this category
of angels, there are many different kinds with different functions. Archangels
and Angels actually carry out and execute what is to be done. They are the
messengers to mankind. This is why angels (such as Gabriel and Raphael)
are the choir sent to communicate with man.

Something to Ponder:
1. If God created the universe and everything is good, why there is evil after the creation of man and woman (events between Chapter 1 & 3 of Genesis)?
2. Why there is suddenly a devil that tempted Eve to eat the Forbidden fruit?
The Origin and fall of the
Angels (Devils):
•God did not create the devil as we know Him – In Genesis 1:1 1 “In the beginning when God created[a] the
heavens and the earth…” when God created the
world even the angelic world He did not have evil angels or demons in it that
time.
•Between chapter 1 & 3 of Genesis there was a rebellion happen in the
angelic world and this was led by Lucifer (Satan) himself because suddenly a
devil appear before Eve to tempt her to sin but it was not shown in the these
stories.
•Revelation 12:3-4 à “3 Then another portent
(sign) appeared in heaven: a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns,
and seven diadems on his heads. 4 His tail swept down a third of the stars of
heaven and threw them to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman who
was about to bear a child, so that he might devour her child as soon as it was born.”
•Lucifer means “Morning
star”;
–Held a high-ranking position in the angelic host; Had
exquisite beauty and great wisdom; Given a position of great power and
influence; Called a guardian cherub (Ezekiel 28:12–17). Cherubim are depicted
in Scripture as powerful and majestic angelic creatures who surround God's
throne.
–His heart became proud
of his incredible beauty. Lucifer allowed his perfection to be the cause
of his corruption.
–Lucifer was not satisfied with worshipping God; instead, he
wanted to be worshipped. Once a beautiful, powerful angel of God, he lost his
former, exalted position in heaven. (Isaiah 14:12–15) “12 How you are fallen from heaven, O Day
Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations
low! 13 You said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my
throne above the stars of God; I will sit on the mount of assembly on the
heights of Zaphon;[a] 14 I will ascend to the tops
of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High.” 15 But you are brought
down to Sheol, to the depths of the Pit.”
–Lucifer ("star of the morning") became Satan
("accuser") when he fell to the earth
–When Satan fell, he did not fall alone. Scripture tells us
that he took one-third of the angels (Revelation 12:4).
A
spiritual creature, man can live this friendship only in free submission to
God. The prohibition against eating "of the tree of the knowledge of good
and evil" symbolically evokes the insurmountable limits that man, being a
creature, must freely recognize and respect with trust. Man is dependent on his
Creator, and subject to the laws of creation and to the moral norms that govern
the use of freedom.
Defintions: To distinguish between paranormal vs. supernatural
·
Natural: is
the action which is proper to the structure of nature. When we speak of nature,
we are referring the nature of the material universe.
·
Preternatural: is
the action which goes beyond the structure of the nature of the material
universe. The fruit of the action of an angelic or demonic nature is said to be
preternatural. The word comes from the Latin "praeter naturam",
beyond nature.
·
Supernatural: is
the action which goes beyond any created nature. This form of activity belongs
only to God.
·
Material
nature is responsible for many oddities, but it will always be
according the laws of the material world and can always be explained by science.
Lost gifts of Adam and Eve:
- Holiness – to share in divine life; no suffering or dying.
- Justice – Inner harmony of human person: between man and woman; between first couple and all creation;
====================================
- Lost and Diminished Gifts
(Further Explanation) -- After Adam and Eve
sinned, not only was Supernatural grace lost in their souls and greatly
diminished their Preternatural gifts.
- Supernatural Gifts
-- divine gifts that are totally beyond created nature which come
directly from God; May be defined as something conferred on nature
that is above all the powers (vires) of created nature. When God created
man, He was not content with bestowing upon him the essential endowments
required by man's nature. He raised him to a higher state, adding
certain gifts to which his nature had no claim. They comprise
qualities and perfections, forces and energies, dignities and rights,
destination to final objects, of which the essential constitution of man
is not the principle; which are not required for the attainment of the
final perfection of the natural order of man; and which can only be
communicated by the free operation of God's goodness and power. Some
of these are absolutely supernatural, i.e. beyond the reach of all
created nature (even of the angels), and elevate the creature to a
dignity and perfection natural to God alone; Sanctifying grace, which elevated
them above their finite limitations so that they could fellowship with
the Infinite God.
- Preternatural Gifts
-- are abilities that are not bound by matter or physical nature but
are bound by laws of created nature (i.e. Sixth Sense or psychic
ability); only relatively supernatural (preternatural), i.e. above
human nature only and elevate human nature to that state of higher
perfection which is natural to the angels. In the beginning God exempted
man from the inherent weakness of his nature, i.e. the infirmities of
the flesh and the consequent infirmities of the spirit. He made man:
- Immortal
-- not mortal; not liable or subject to death; undying: our immortal
souls; not liable to perish or decay;
imperishable; everlasting; perpetual;
lasting; constant.
- Impassible
-- incapable of suffering pain;
incapable of suffering harm; incapable of emotion; impassive.
- Free
from Concupiscence -- sexual desire;
lust; ardent, usually sensuous, longing; Control over their instincts
and drives.
- Infused
Knowledge -- The gift of natural
(secular) and supernatural (spiritual) knowledge miraculously
conferred by God. Thought by some to have been possessed by Adam and
Eve, who came into existence in an adult state and were to be the first
teachers of the human race.
- Sinless
-- free from or without sin.
- Lord
of the earth
- The original state of man comprised both of these, and when he fell he lost both. Christ has restored to us the absolutely supernatural gifts, but the preternatural gifts He has not restored.
The wickedness of fallen angels and men:
Genesis 6:1-8: When people began to multiply on the face of the ground,
and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that they were
fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they
chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My spirit shall not
abide[a] in mortals forever, for they are flesh; their days shall be one
hundred twenty years.” 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the
sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them.
These were the heroes that were of old, warriors of renown.
5 The Lord saw that the
wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of
the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. 6 And
the Lord was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it
grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out
from the earth the human beings I have created—people together with animals and
creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made
them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord.
The
Dragon Fights Again on Earth
13 So when the dragon
saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued[d] the woman who had
given birth to the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the
great eagle, so that she could fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her
place where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 Then
from his mouth the serpent poured water like a river after the woman, to sweep
her away with the flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman; it
opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his
mouth. 17 Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on
the rest of her children, those who keep the commandments of God and hold the
testimony of Jesus.
• Where are devils or demons now?
–Job 1:6–10 Now there was a day when the
sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came
among them. And the LORD said to Satan,
'From where do you come?' So Satan answered the LORD and said, 'From going to
and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.' Then the LORD said to Satan, 'Have you considered My servant Job,
that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who
fears God and shuns evil?' So Satan answered the LORD and said, 'Does Job fear
God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household,
and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his
hands, and his possessions have increased in the land'.
Things we need to do on how to avoid temptation and commit sin:
•Always
think about the Lord's commandment – obedience to law will keep you away from sin or committing mistakes
in life.
•Conscience – is the result of eating the Forbidden
Fruit -- knowing good and evil.
•Recognize
your tendency toward sin -- James
1:14 explains that we are
tempted when we become enticed by our own natural desires. The first step
toward avoiding temptation, is recognizing our human tendency to be tempted by
our own fleshly desires.
•The
more you believe in Christ, the more pressure Satan will put on you to sin, and
it's no coincidence -- We must recognize an
attack when it arrives, and Satan has many devices. He may use your past, pent-up anxieties of
the future, anything to kill your feelings of worthiness and make you falter in
your relationship with Christ. For the truth is, Satan wants you back. Back to living just in a material world and
not living in conjunction with the Lord. And if he were to pry you back, you
would not find spiritual happiness. Ephesians 6:11, "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be
able to stand against the wiles of the devil." Ephesians 4:27, "Neither give place to the
devil.". Temptation is a given,
so don't be surprised by it. Rather, expect to be tempted. Be prepared for it.
•Avoid
situations that may lead you to making a sinful act --
This may mean the type of people you hang out with, or the scene. Pray silently
if you cannot pray out loud. Proverbs 13:20, "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be
destroyed.".
•Run
away from the temptation -- 1 Corinthians 10:13.
It says, "But remember that the temptations that come into your life are
no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the
temptation from becoming so strong that you can't stand up against it. When you
are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it.".
When you are face to face with temptation, look for the way out that God
has promised and then run as fast as you can.
•Turn
your back on sin from the past --- Don't live as if it happened, live as if it did not. Once you ask for
forgiveness, God then completely forgets about it. Yes, forgets as if you never sinned in the
first place! So act like Him, He's forgotten and that's all that matters,
so why don't you? Otherwise, it has a
hold on you (and ignore Satan's voice saying, "No he hasn't... Are you
sure..."). Yes, God has forgotten your previous sins. The Word never lies.
Hebrews 10:17, "And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more."
•Remember that we need to trust God even when being
tempted. Resist with the Word of truth. --- Resist the devil, and he shall flee from you (James 4:7). He will
be fleeing. He's afraid of us because he's afraid of Jesus and the love of God.
•Repent quickly when you fail --- In several places the Bible tells us the
best way to resist temptation is to flee from it (1 Corinthians 6:18; 1
Corinthians 10:14; 1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22). Yet still we all fail from
time to time. We fail to flee. Notice I didn't say, repent quickly if you fail. Having a more realistic
view—knowing that at times you will fail—should help you to repent quickly when
you do. It is not the end of the world when you fail, but it is very dangerous
to persist in your sin. Going back to James 1, verse 15 explains that sin
"when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."
Devil Strategy:
• He started by attacking the mind. You can never truly say, "The devil made me do it." The tempter needs cooperation from the tempted.
• Satan works with two close allies: the world and the flesh.
–The world refers to the way the world
operates now, which is hostile to God -- living for personal gratification and
putting our own will above all else.
–The flesh refers to the sinful nature
that lives to be gratified; unrestrained sensual appetites -- the lust of the
flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father, but is
of the world
How to sabotage the devil’s strategy:
• Word of God -- Jesus, during His time of
temptation in the wilderness, chose to use this weapon to show us its power.
While He could have used His divine authority and power to ward off His enemy, He responded to Satan's
distortions of Scripture with accurate recitations of God's Word.
• Timothy 2:22 gives us the key: "Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
• Timothy 2:22 gives us the key: "Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
Devil's Limited Power:
• We should never underestimate the devil. He is a sly and skillful foe,
with many years of experience in dealing with humankind.
• Even after his fall, Satan still has access to the throne of God. Though Satan lost his once high-ranking
position, he still can personally see God. In spite of his power and wicked
agenda, Satan has to seek God's permission before he does anything to the child
of God because of the "hedge of protection" God has put around his children. (Job
1:6–10)
• Satan is not equal to God:
–Satan is not
Omnipotent -- almighty or infinite
power; having very great or unlimited authority or power;
–Satan is not
Omniscient -- Infinite knowledge and
wisdom;
• Satan is not Omnipresent -- present everywhere at the same timeHow to stand strong on the devil’s attacks:
• Be strong in the Lord -- "Be strong in the Lord and in
the power of His might" (Ephesians 6:10); ask the Lord to receive the Holy Spirit.
• Remember God’s Love for you -- "My Father. . .is greater than
all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand" (John
10:29).
• Remember Christ victory over
Satan at the Cross --
"For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the
works of the devil" (1 John 3:8).
• We are not fighting for our
victory, we are fighting from His victory
-- "The battle is not yours, but God's" (2 Chronicles 20:15)
• Resist the Devil -- "Resist the devil and he will
flee from you" (James 4:7)

Prayer for the Help of the Holy Spirit
O God, I thank you for this day and the lessons that we have learned today. May You send forth your Holy Spirit and stay forever into my heart that I may perceive and understand You more, into my mind that I may remember, and into my soul that I may meditate. Inspire me to speak and behave with patience, piety, holiness, tenderness and mercy. Teach, guide and direct my thoughts and senses from beginning to end. By Your grace, we may live and preach on the Words that You spoke to us today. May your grace ever help and correct me, and may I be strengthened now with love and wisdom from on high, for the sake of your infinite mercy. Amen.
